Planning a Celebrant-led wedding in the UK and wondering how to make it legal?
Don’t worry—it’s easier than you think!
Here’s your step-by-step guide to making it official, while still having the personalised ceremony of your dreams.
Step 1: Book Your Wedding Venue
Secure your dream location early, especially during peak season. If you’re not having a registrar perform your legal marriage, you’re free to choose any venue—indoors, outdoors, private land, or even your own garden (with permission).
Step 2: Choose Your Celebrant
Find a Celebrant who fits your vision and personality. Unlike registrars, Celebrants offer fully bespoke ceremonies and often only officiate one wedding per day. You’ll build a connection, create a unique ceremony, and include any special rituals you like (think handfasting or sand ceremonies!).
Step 3: Register Your Intent to Marry
This is required for all legal marriages in the UK, even if you’re using a Celebrant.
England & Wales: Give notice at least 29 days before.
Scotland: Submit M10 forms 29+ days in advance.
Northern Ireland: 28 days’ notice required.
Step 4: Do the Legal Bit – Opt for a simple, no-frills legal signing at a registry office.
The “2:2 Ceremony / Simple Statutory service.
Bring 2 witnesses.
Choose from pre-approved legal vows.
Save your rings, vows, and personal touches for your Celebrant-led ceremony.
Cost (as of 2024):

Step 5: Plan Your Dream Day
Once the paperwork’s done, your options are limitless. Whether you’re getting married in a woodland, a stately home garden, or a mountaintop, your Celebrant will be there to make it magical.
