Funerals

Saying Goodbye

In 2019, I had the honour of speaking at my dad's funeral. I’ll be honest, doing so felt like a daunting task in front of the congregation trying to do him proud, but I was determined it
would be a true celebration of his life. After a private cremation service, we moved to our local church for the main event, where more of his friends could join in.

I was lucky enough to have a close relationship with my dad, and a dreary, sombre service just would not have suited him one bit. My dad was someone who brought laughter sometimes not intentionally, to so many, so I did my best to carry that torch. I shared all kinds of stories, some probably sounded remarkably familiar to friends in the crowd who knew him well, no doubt thinking, "Oh yes, classic him!"

The church filled with chuckles and knowing smiles, and in those moments, we celebrated him as the funny, kind, and incredible man he was, someone who loved his family unequivocally.

I wanted to honour him, not by hiding the tears, but by remembering the laughs he gave us all. And I think he would’ve loved every single bit of it, and I could almost hear him saying, “How did I know you were going to tell that one!”

A heartfelt farewell to an extraordinary soul
